Helping You Find Success With EMDR Therapy

Do You Feel Stuck In Trauma? EMDR Can Help!

Living with the effects of trauma or prolonged abuse can make you feel like your past is holding you back from your potential. You may feel afraid each day, wondering if something during your day-to-day routine will trigger a traumatic memory—or that you will relive the trauma all over again. Nightmares or relentless flashbacks may lead you to poor sleep patterns. The devastating symptoms associated with trauma and abuse can make you feel alone in your struggle. Perhaps you have tried other forms of therapy and medication with few positive results.

Understanding EMDR Therapy

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of psychotherapy used to resolve symptoms triggered by traumatic experiences. The approach was formed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, a psychologist in Palo Alto in 1987. EMDR therapy was created to resolve trauma-related disorders resulting from distressing events, such as sexual assaults or military combat.

EMDR is a combination of several bilateral stimulations of the brain. It combines eye movements, bilateral sounds, visualized images and body sensations to stimulate optical nerves.

EMDR therapy reduces the symptoms created by trauma. It creates new connections in the brain between distressing events and new, more positive information. EMDR therapy entails reprocessing the disturbing memories by feeling them more fully in a safe environment. As a result symptoms are reduced and traumatic memories are desensitized.

Based on the evidence of the American Psychiatric Association and The Department of Veterans Affairs and Defense, EMDR is the most effective support in the treatment of trauma. EMDR therapy has been proven to be effective on different types of mental health diagnoses, including depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
